Chuunin Exams 1 and 2

Ep 20
The team complete a number of lame D missions. Naruto is still at odds with Sasuke. The team has a confrontation with genins (Temari, Kankurou, and Gaara) from the Hidden Village of Sand. Kakashi and the other jounin are called to a meeting with the Hokage who announces the chuunin selection exams.

Ep 21
The jounins (Kakashi, Kurenai, Asuma) nominate their rookie genin teams for the chuunin selection exams, but Iruka protests that they're not ready. The Hokage agrees to preliminary tests. Naruto must save Moegi, Sakura must get past her doubts, and Sasuke is attacked. Will they pass?.

Ep 22
Rock Lee flirts with Sakura and challenges Sasuke to a fight. Naruto jumps in instead, but Lee easily knocks out Naruto. Sasuke and Lee face off. Sasuke resorts to using his sharingan, but Lee is a taijutsu expert, the worst possible matchup for the sharingan!

Ep 23
The team meets the other rookie leaf genins taking the exams. They also meet Kabuto, an upperclassman who gives them some tips. The room atmosphere is tense. Kakashi thinks of his boasts to Gai and worries that his team is "probably shaking in their boots right about now."  But instead, Naruto proclaims he won't lose!

Ep 24
The first exam is a written test with a number of odd rules. The questions are extremely difficult, but while Naruto is having problems, Sakura proceeds to answer the questions. Sasuke deduces the trick, but will Naruto?

Ep 25
Ibiki gives out the 10th question. With one special rule. Ibiki is a pro at torture and interrogation. Although there will be no physical torture during the exam, the genin will feel mental stress through his interrogation skills. He is Konoha's Anbu torture and interrogation squad leader! Naruto must make a life changing decision. Will he stay a genin forever?

Ep 26
Ep 26 and 27 were apparently shown in Japan as a double feature. The first is a review episode in the form of interviews for the academy newspaper. Starts with Naruto doing a commercial for a Naruto time change. Then there's a cute skit with Kakashi on a mission to get the right tape for the show. Konohamaru and friends are here for a story on the chuunin exam for the school paper and want to ask Naruto some questions. Naruto talks about himself and his teammates, dissing Sasuke as a conceited miserable guy, and says Sakura is in love with him. Sakura talks about ninjutsu, Naruto and lots about Sasuke. Sasuke speaks and flashbacks to their encounter with Gaara, Lee and Neji. and ends with talking about being a team. Kakashi has finally brought the tape for the next episode.

Ep 27
Anko explains the second exam, an extreme survival match. It's a competition where anything goes over the scrolls of Heaven and Earth. Each of the 26 teams will get one scroll, either Heaven or Earth. They need one of each and must reach the tower within 5 days. After exchanging the scroll for signed consent forms, they will pick a gate entrance and will begin at the same time. Her last piece of advice - don't die!

Ep 28
Sasuke battles the rain genin. Afterwards, the team sits down for a meeting and Sasuke says if they get separated they need a password in case someone tranforms to look like one of them. Sasuke comes up with a really long password. Sakura memorizes it at first try, but Naruto has problems. They are attacked again! Sasuke fights a Grass genin with a long tongue. Naruto is attacked by a huge snake which squeezes and swallows him whole!

Ep 29
Sasuke realizes the Grass genin is way above their level and offers the Grass genin the scroll. Naruto objects and grabs it away and punches Sasuke. He says he's a fake Sasuke, that idiot and coward in front of him can't be the real Sasuke. Even if they give the Grass genin the scroll, there is no guarantee he will let them go. The Grass genin says Naruto is right and he rolls up his sleeve, spreads blood on his arm and summons a monstrous snake! Meanwhile, examiners find the bodies of 3 grass genin, but with no faces!

Ep 30
Sasuke thinks he has to survive to kill his brother, turns on his sharingan, and attacks the grass genin with everything he's got! But is it good enough?

Ep 31
Sakura takes care of Sasuke and Naruto who are unconscious. At daybreak, the Sound team is about to attack, but Sakura has a few surprises for them, but they're not good enough and it looks bad for team 7. Rock Lee appears and says he will protect her until he dies!

Ep 32
After fighting both Zaku and Dosu, Lee is down and things look bad. Sakura does her pathetic best against Zaku and Kin. But now Team 10 has arrived to help, or will they? Ino has past issues with Sakura!

Ep 33
Team 10 to the rescue, sort of, Shikamura literally drags Choji by his scarf. Choji (meat tank) faces Zaku (air cutter), while Shikamaru deals with Dosu. Shikamaru's shadow reaches Dosu and binds him. Ino uses her mind transfer technique against Kin. Team 10 has the upper hand at first, but the sound team is willing to sacrifice their teammate and team 10 gives up. The sound team wants Sasuke, but be careful what you wish for! They get much much more than what they can handle when Sasuke wakes up with the cursed seal!

Ep 34
Team 8 (Hinata, Kiba, Shino) has both scrolls, but Kiba gets greedy. They watch the encounter between the sand team vs. the rain team. Gaara reveals his exceptional powers, both defense and offense, to the shock of team 8 and the misfortune of the rain genins!

Ep 35
Sasuke notes there are only 25-26 hours left and a lot of teams probably finished already. Naruto suggests to Sakura to make a counterfeit scroll and suggests opening their scroll. Luckily, Kabuto appears and stops them. He explains on the last day, the easiest place to get a scroll is around the tower. They head towards the tower but find they are already in someone's trap!

Ep 36
All the clones are replications with no physical bodies. Naruto punches one but another body forms from the first. Sasuke turns on his sharingan but his cursed seal starts to activate. The enemy's hidden somewhere and is attacking to match their moves with the illusions. Naruto uses kage bunshin and destroys all the clones, but they reform. The rest of the team join in, but dawn approaches and the team is exhausted. The Rain genins finally come out and are about to attack!

Ep 37
Sakura and Naruto open the scrolls and sees the character for "person" (jin) on each. Iruka appears to welcome them, summoned by the scroll. The Hokage talks about the true purpose of the chuunin exams. The official reason for the joint exam with allied nations is to maintain good relations and heighten the level of the ninja, but it is actually the epitome of a war between the allied nations. Seven teams have passed the second exam, and according to chuunin regulations they will have to have preliminary matches!
