Ep 186: Laughing Shino

An exhausted Naruto follows Shino on a mission. On the way to Motoyoshi village they encounter an old lady. She gives them a dire warning that even the dead laugh there and if they force you to laugh, it's over. She cackles mysteriously and goes on her way. Shino and Naruto arrive at the village which is in a valley. The village is set up for an important funeral. The client, Moshino Kagetsu Fuuta, explains to them that his father, Kagetsu Poubei left a will that he, the eldest son, will inherit everything if...

Flashback to Tsunade giving Shino and Naruto the mission. She tells them there will be a large funeral in Motoyoshi village presided by the Kagetsu family's head. Shino assume it's funeral security and impossible for Naruto because of his reckless face. Tsunade says there's no one else and Shino will be the lead for the mission as he is the most suitable. There's another part to the mission and when they read the will they'll understand.

The will says that if Fuuta laughs out loud, he won't get the inheritance and it will be divided among the rest of the family. The Kagetsu family's mountain funeral sanctuary is filled with medicinal herbs and if he inherits it he won't have to worry about money. But if he laughs at the funeral he'll lose everything. However, he can have a representative at the funeral so that's why he hired Konoha's shinobi to get someone who will not laugh. The younger sister Mai appears and tells them dinner is ready. Naruto is about to eat his rice but Shino wants to check for poison. The destruction bugs in his body will break it down. He eats some rice and then gives a snort, then starts to laugh hysterically. The bugs can't break down the laughing drug so Naruto has to attend the funeral. Poor Shino laughs late into the night.

The next day Tsukiko, the older sister, arrives for the funeral with her husband. She left the village five years ago and is the one most after the money.

Shino watches the funeral proceedings from a tree and sees the old lady from before walking around.

The monk to conduct the ceremony arrives and he has three long hairs on his head. Naruto can barely contain himself as the hairs come off. Naruto finally lets it out but luckily a water basin crashes down and masks his laughter. Tsukiko accuses him but Mai covers for him. It was Shino's bugs who caused the distraction. As the ceremony starts a man goes first to pay his respects. As he kneels, the seat of his pants rips and his skimpy thong and bottom show through. Another guy gets up and sneezes out a flower. He sucks it back in and it comes out through the other nostril. Naruto has to put his hand over his mouth and knock his head against the floor to keep from laughing.

Shino follows the old woman from the other day and sees Mai approach her.

Another guy dances crazily during the ceremony.

The old lady gives Mai a canister and tells her to put “it” in everyone's tea. Shino approaches, still laughing.

The ceremony is almost over and Naruto gives his thanks and is about to leave when Tsukiko's husband comes up and exposes his large belly painted with a funny face. He dances around and it looks like his belly is talking. His wife sprays his body with a water gun and it looks like the face is crying. The monk and Fuuta start to laugh. Naruto starts to tear and tries to think of something sad. Tsukiko pulls off her husband's toupee and exposes another face drawn on his bald head.

Then the dead guy appears, laughing, and three kids appear, arguing about who made him laugh first. The three children are the family as kids. The father dances around saying nonsense and everyone starts laughing.

Mai and the old lady appear and the old lady is actually the dead guy and Shino and his bug bunshins were the family. Shino has stopped laughing. The old man explains he planned this a long time ago. Before they discovered the herbs the family was poor but happy. But when they became rich all they talked about was money. He wanted everyone to smile and remember what was important. The family make up and everyone laughs.

At the end of the mission the father explains he wanted to test the laughing medicine on Shino and planned to put it in the tea, but Shino told him even though he laughed he wasn't enjoying it and he was crying inside.

Naruto points out to Shino some of the silly things he said during the funeral. Shino suddenly grabs him and warns Naruto to forget it.

Review: I didn’t laugh at all.
